  Highly recommend Karl Mattes. We have a 16 year old solarium that was leaking. It was a very difficult job, and he returned numerous times to make sure to fix all the leaks. He is a professional who returns calls, arrives when he says he will, and makes sure to complete a job to perfection. We are very happy with the work he does, and his customer service.

  After getting two very overpriced estimates to repair our chimney, Karl came out and gave us a reasonable estimate and included waterproofing. The other two companies wanted us to wait until spring but Karl was out within 4 days. It was a two day job. The workers were friendly, pleasant and did a great job. They cleaned up and the chimney looks great.

  They did an excellent job on my chimney and roof flashing, sealing it with mortar and not more flimsy sealant that many other companies use. I needed to mine redone because it degraded in less than 10 years and the roofer refused to repair. It was a good thing they didn't because their work is not on a par with Karl Mattes.

  I had heard great things about this company, great ratings and close to us. I called to ask for an estimate for two things: cost to remove and cost to repair our chimney. I talked with Karl himself - super nice and upbeat. He said he would stop by the next week early. Three weeks later I called to check the progress since we hadn’t heard anything. A woman answered and chided and grilled me on who I had talked to saying that unless I had talked to her she would have no way to ensure it would get done. I held on and politely answered her questions since perhaps she was having a bad day. We then received an estimate in the mail - but only for removing the chimney. I called again to ask if our original request to include repairing it would be available. The same woman answered - just as curt and short but I went with it believing she must just be efficient since was a five star company. It was very clear I was inconveniencing her. Now I have continued to call about every three weeks to check whether the estimate may happen. Yesterday was my last call. The same lady who answered now told me ‘well maybe that is his recommendation so that is the only estimate he provided’. I said ‘it has been weeks of me asking and that was not ever made clear especially when he said he’d provide both- how were we to know this’. She said she would remind him. After this I have now talked to two other well-rated companies who are very responsive and who have said absolutely it is our choice as homeowners to have our chimney repaired or taken down. I don’t know what is happening at Karl Mattes but it has been excruciating. I don’t feel confident they would ever get to doing the actual work - or do what we’d asked. I sadly now would not recommend this company after so many good reviews. I wish I could talk to Karl and let him know our experience. I hope he is ok.

  Karl Mattes and his company were excellent, professional, and delivered excellent quality work with high craftsmanship. They rebuilt my fireplace, parged smoke chamber, lined flue, and capped chimney on a 110 year old Craftsman house. Very reasonable and great detailed explanation of procedures and requirements.
