  Everything went well until the last day of the installation. I chose ledger-stone for the fireplace surround, and the two surfaces done on the last day were rushed. The stone should have been cut to fit, so that there weren’t a bunch of odd projections. Greg told me that the projections were normal and due to the way the corners were made. I have since had other contractors look at the work, and I’ve been told that the stone was not installed correctly. The stone should have been cut to fit so that the stone on the corners met up. There shouldn’t have been stone projecting out 1-1 1/2” from the face of the fireplace. The outside corners look okay, but the inside corners do not. Overall, I’m disappointed with the way the stone was installed. While I think Greg did a good job on installing the firebox, the masonry work was not done well, so the end product doesn’t look good. I called Greg about the issue, but he never got back to me with a plan to correct the problem. I will be getting the fireplace stonework partially redone, at an additional cost to me of $350. Another issue was that you could see the “guts” of the fireplace. I had to pay an additional $500 to get that issue resolved by having Greg install different vent covers and paint the inside of the firebox black. As much as I would like to recommend Fireplace by Design, you should hire someone who has better masonry skills and a better idea of what is aesthetically acceptable if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a fireplace that doesn’t look right.

  From start to finish my experience working with Greg and Fireplace by Design was stellar! Greg worked with me to select the right product for my basement remodel and his prices were the best of all the companies I researched. He handled all the work personally from submitting permits to installation of the unit and then came back for a follow up to clean, adjust and to provide instruction on how to to operate the system properly. My remodeling contractor handled the final install of the mantle and stone but when any concerns came up I felt more comfortable calling Greg, who was always patient and available to answer my questions. And I'm confident should any future questions/issues arise, Greg will be there to handle them with the same professionalism and knowledge. There are many fireplace companies out there and the product choices can be overwhelming. Greg at Fireplace by Design was the most responsive and price competitive to work with by far. I Highly, Highly Recommend!

  Greg was friendly, super knowledgeable and professional from the start. He came and did a site visit and consult with us, then provided some guidance and samples before scheduling the job. A few days of work and some last minute decisions wrapped up an amazing project that are super happy with. He'll be back to put something else in the basement when we finish that and I would highly recommend anyone give him a call whether you're in need of service, a renovation or, like us, a build from scratch.
